Henry County’s Historical Military Museum is officially open at Heritage Park in McDonough! Everything tells a story inside the iconic red barn, from the array of uniforms, some of which date back to World War I, to the rations, equipment and supplies, and all of it is displayed to give the public a true sense of the life of a soldier.

Both the village and museum sit just a stone’s throw from the Veterans Wall of Honor, an 80-foot long granite monument depicting battle scenes and famous quotations that honor the bravery and sacrifices of the United States Veterans.  The Veterans Wall of Honor is outdoors, and is open to the public during the daytime.

The Military Museum is open Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. whenever County offices are open. Heritage Park is located at 101 Lake Dow Road, just off Highway 81 East in McDonough.  In addition to the museum, the Historic Village at Heritage Park boasts a Settler’s Cabin, old Schoolhouse, corn crib, store, detached cookhouse, and a 1934 Steam Locomotive.

There’s lots to see and do at Heritage Park for all ages — plan a visit and enjoy a picnic under a pavilion and let the kids play in the Kidsville Playground, and explore the community gardens.

When you leave, take a stroll around the historic McDonough square and shop the unique boutiques and enjoy dinner by candle light or live music at one of our fine restaurants in town.  Get a true taste of southern hospitality at one of our comfy McDonough hotels.
